My son, age 7, has moderate/ severe autism and marked anxiety. He was never very comfortable in the water, and we had some false starts with swim lessons when he was 4. But as he grew to like playing in the ocean and swimming with a life vest from time to time, I thought to try swim lessons. Dylan and I liked Jodi instantly. She showed a genuine interest in him and an open mind to meet him in his comfort zone and work from there. As a special mom, I have found this to be that special something that not every caregiver has with kids on the spectrum. But Jodi has it. Within a month, Dylan was holding his breath and going underwater. Loving swim lessons! He puts on his trunks several hours before it is time to go to lessons- that’s how much he loves it. And he’s progressing, too. In 3-6 months, he went from barely being able to stand being in the water to being water-safe, a real swimmer. We highly recommend Jodi and Special Fishies!
Jodi has a personal passion for swimming and teaching, and it shows in all of her work. My five year-old son, who has always been scared of going to swim lessons, actually looks forward to seeing Jodi. Her approach is caring, nurturing, and safe. My younger son has a rare neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which causes muscle weakening. Due to this disease, he is unable to stand and walk on his own. Swim therapy is a huge asset for him. Jodi takes extra care in teaching with his special needs. He is getting great physical therapy while learning water safety and a love of the water. Jodi is professional, easy to work with, and exudes care and passion in everything she does. As a mother of a special needs child who is extra cautious and choosy in our instructors, I can wholeheartedly recommend Jodi and her swim school. I hope others get to experience working with such a great teacher.
Best regards, Nikki McIntosh
Little Fishies is such a gift for our daughter, Brooke. It’s so great to see her body so relaxed in the warm water. Coach Jodi is so gentle and soothing, while getting Brooke to work all of the muscles in her body. Coach Jodi works so well with Brooke and Brooke truly enjoys being in the class. It’s one of our favorite activities to do for our sweet Brooke.
Scarlett thoroughly loves Jodi and all of the her team. She is amazing and this is the only program where my daughter didn’t want to leave. If you want your child to learn to swim and enjoy it with patient, kind and loving team members and campers whom are all kind to one another this is your go to hands down! Also, all the parents/Moms are super nice!
Thank you to Special Fishies for your love, patience, and amazing skills in teaching my daughter how to swim. I am forever grateful for your service. You are professional and I can tell that you have years and years of experience in dealing with children with special needs. The world is a better place because of this group.
Jodi was amazing with my special needs nephew. My sister was in tears to see him in the water floating safely with Jodi. She taught us so many things we can do with him in the pool to help with his mobility. Jodi has a special gift and a huge heart working with these kids. She is truly and angel on earth!
